Another couple’s shoot organized through Model Mayhem (MM #774580). I think I’ve got one more of these coming up. This has really been a nice way for me to update my portfolio in a hurry (and seriously, taking pictures of beautiful people in love in beautiful places is the sort of thing we should all be doing for free.)
This one definitely reminds me of the whole "rules are made to be broken". Everybody "knows" that portraits should be taken at somewhere between 50mm and 135mm, and for the couple’s shoots I’ve tried consciously to stay at longer focal lengths and further from the subjects. And for the most part that has worked great. But there are times when you’ve gotta break the rules. Right about the time this was taken, the sky suddenly started clearing up (it had been pretty hazy) and there was some noticeable blue in the sky, but especially because the beach is pretty narrow and fairly steep, I just couldn’t get any of the blue sky into the shot with a longer lens. So I reached into my bag for the 10-22mm zoom, went superwide (this is 10mm on a 1.6x sensor), and was able to bring in some color. There were quite a few other lovely shots in the hour or so we were out, but this was the first moment where I had an "Aha! This is gonna be awesome!"
Strobist: Unsurprisingly (if you follow me), there’s also some flash fill in this. I’ve got a 580 gelled 1/2 CTO @ 1/2 on a light stand about 5 feet from the subjects, zoomed in to about 70mm, slightly left of the camera, bare. My intent was to be shooting this with a pretty narrow aperture so that I could get down into the sync speed of the flash, and there are others that were taken around this point in the shoot where that was done properly. (Triggered via RadioPopper Jrx). But this one still had things set to Av, which put it at a very fast shutter, and it just happened to actually get a whisper of the flash. Still had to be tweaked in post, but in the shots where the flash didn’t happen (or didn’t luck out in syncing at all), the lack of fill is dramatic.
So yeah, a lot of doing things "wrong" led me to easily one of my favorite shots in the last month. I love it when that happens. 🙂
